A construction student at South Essex College is doing it for the girls and making her way into the male dominated building trade.
Charlotte Bettis, 16, from West Thurrock, studies the Level 1 Construction course at the college’s Thurrock Campus.
As one of the only females on the course, Charlotte has a unique opportunity to break into the industry. She hopes to become either an architect or a fully-qualified plumber in the future.
The one-year construction course offers individuals the perfect opportunity to try all the trades before they commit to a career.
Students undertake six-week sessions in plumbing, carpentry, painting
and decorating, plastering and bricklaying.
Charlotte first became interested in construction when she started working with her dad, a multi-tradesman, a few times a month.
She said: “My dad opened my eyes to the possibilities in these industries.
“At school, I enjoyed woodwork more than other subjects.
“So I thought this could be the route for me.
“The course is a great way to learn about all the trades and pick and choose what you want to focus on.
“There needs to be more girls in the industry. I’d definitely recommend it.”
John Smith, construction lecturer, said: “Charlotte’s abilities are amazing.
“She has a real talent for this kind of work.
“Her pipe bending and soldering skills are as good as anything I could do.
“I see a bright future in the industry for her.”
