HIGHWAYS bosses have done a U-turn on controversial plans to block off awell-used road.

County Hall has scrapped proposals to ban motorists turning right from Wash Road, near the Dunton Road junction, on to Noak Hill Road, Noak Bridge.

The scheme caused uproar among residents, who claimed they would be “stranded’’.

Rodney Bass, Essex County Councillor responsible for roads, has said he will look at alternative traffic measures to improve the “dangerous’’ junction.

County Hall drew up plans to block the right turn after five accidents were recorded in the last three years.

The proposed scheme was met with anger because it would block off a popular route to the A127, meaning motorists would have to divert through Laindon to get to Basildon town centre.

Commenting on the Echo website, one driver said: “I find the proposal ridiculous.

“It would cause more problems in other areas.

“Why not simply add a mini-roundabout or traffic lights to solve the whole problem? The turning has been a danger spot for years, so we are all glad to hear news that it is up for amendment, but a left turn only is not the answer here.’’

Another resident said the scheme would cause congestion at the High Road junction, off the Fortune of War roundabout.

Mr Bass said: “I would like to advise residents that I have decided to intervene and have determined that there will be no ban on turning right.

“I shall be looking at alternative solutions for improving the junction.”
