Others, including Rebel Wilson and Sacha Baron Cohen have addressed the Oscars diversity row – with close-to-the-bone remarks about where Bafta stands on the issue.

Here are quotes to remember from the 2016 Baftas

Sacha Baron Cohen, presenting the award for best actress and addressing the Oscars diversity issue.

“Bafta has shown none of the discrimination and prejudice which is so shamefully on display at the Oscars. It gives me great pride that every single year, Bafta makes sure that at least one of the nominees for best actress is a Dane … And the nominations for best white actress go to … ”

Stephen Fry on best actor nominee Michael Fassbender.

“I want to click on him, drag him on stage and a short while later delete my history.”

Leonardo DiCaprio, after winning the best actor award.

“There’s one person I have to thank. I would not be standing up here if it weren’t for this person. I didn’t grow up in a life of privilege. I grew up in a very rough neighbourhood in East Los Angeles. And this woman drove me three hours a day to a different school to show me a different opportunity. It’s her birthday today – Mom, happy birthday, I love you very much.”

Rebel Wilson, presenting the award for best supporting actor and addressing the Oscars diversity controversy.

“I have never been invited to the Oscars because as you know they are racist. But the Baftas have diverse members, and that’s what we all want to see in life, isn’t it? Diverse members.”

Rebel Wilson again, to best supporting actor nominee Idris Elba.

Carrie Fisher, presenting the award for a film not in the English language with Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson and objecting to her pre-written joke.

“I have no idea what you said. Could we get some subtitles in here? … I don’t know, they wrote it. I don’t like making Irish jokes.”
