TEENAGER Edward Lynch is determined to help other young people this Christmas...with the help of his 7,000 Christmas lights.

Edward Lynch, 18, who lives in Poynings Avenue, Southend, says he was inspired after one day realising how lucky he was to be young, healthy and in employment.

Edward has now spent in excess of £600 on festive lights and his mission is to raise cash for Southend YMCA.

He has even taken a week off work to put up the lights adorning his house and a tree, as well as a reindeer and hi-tech laser light display.

Mr Lynch, an engineering apprentice at Ipeco, in Aviation Way, Southend, said: “I think I have been lucky with my job and life, but there are people out there who aren’t so lucky.

“Also this charity is wonderful, it works within Essex to help so many young people.”

Southend YMCA’s offers support, guidance, education, housing, training and recreational activities for children and young people.

It provides youngsters with accommodation, if they are homeless, and gives them the chance to get qualifications, as well as supporting young carers.

Edward added: “I raised money for the charity last year as well and raised £236 for them.

“I got a lovely letter from the charity afterwards, thanking me and saying the money was going to be spent on improving the accommodation. It is really nice to know where the money is going.”

Mr Lynch first started decorating his parents house after moving there four years ago. Donations can be sent in online, or by posting an envelope through the door. And , despite the vast number of lights, Mr Lynch said the decorations didn’t cost too much to run, as they were LED lights.

He estimates that running costs to be about £35 a month.
