TODAY we are looking back at the work of local Women’s Royal Voluntary Service groups.

The WRVS - the largest volunteering organisation in British history - was formed in 1938. It was initially founded to help recruit women into the ARP movement to assist civilians during and after air raids by providing emergency rest centres, feeding, first aid, and to organise the evacuation and billeting of children.

After the war it transformed to become a leading organisation in the field of social care, pioneering the practices that formed the cornerstone of modern social services today.

Today the charity is known as the Royal Voluntary Service.
