TWO schools are considering forming a multi-academy trust.

The Bromfords School, in Wickford, and the Billericay School are looking to form the trust after working closely together for some years.

A multi-academy trust, known as MAT, has responsibility for the performance of the schools within the trust, but both can have their own governing body.

Becoming part of the trust means the schools will share the additional responsibilities after they become academies.

In a letter to parents Don Morris, chairman of governors of Bromfords School said the formation of the MAT would be of benefit to the students at both schools.

The letter, seen by the Echo, reads: “As you may know, the Bromfords School and Sixth Form College and the Billericay School have successfully collaborated on a number of educational projects for several years.

“Discussions have been ongoing for some time between the headteachers and governing body, and representatives of the two schools with regard to the possible formation of a Multi Academy Trust.

“These discussions have resulted in a recent decision by both governing bodies to pursue an initial MAT application to the Regional Commissioner (Department for Education).

“We believe this will be for the long-term benefit of both schools and also the benefit of their students.

“The governing bodies are therefore now minded to proceed to full consultation with stakeholders on this issue.”

A consultation period will take place until March 3, with the governing body making a final decision on March 21.

If ratified by the Department for Education, the MAT could be in place by September, ready for the next school year.

One mum who has children at the Bromfords School said: “Both my children have achieved really well at the school.

“Most schools have to become academies by the year 2020 I think so joining with a good school hopefully can only be a good thing.”

No one was available from either school to comment on the proposals before the Echo went to print.
