TRIBUTES have been paid to the “loveliest” theatre worker who dedicated her life to greeting stars.

Jean Williams, of Elizabeth House, in Hadleigh, died aged 76.

She worked at the Cliffs Pavilion, in Station Road, Westcliff, for 15 years as a stage door keeper and on front of house.

During her time at the venue her kind heart won her the nickname Auntie Jean.

Her proud daughter Karen Fields, 51, said she has been inundated with messaged of condolence from stars of the stage - including comedians Bobby Davro and Joe Pasquale and former glamour model Linda Lusardi and her actor husband Sam Kane.

She said: “Mum was the heart and soul of stage door, she offered tea, a smile, a hug and even money for the in house stage crew.

“She performed on many stages and in many local shows and pantomimes,. It was her life and she enjoyed every moment.

“Everyone always said that after on a long journey on the road they were always met by Jean with a nice cuppa and a friendly face. My Facebook has been inundated with many messages and memories.

“She was loved by so many, not just through the Cliffs but by many local operatic societies too.”

Jean retired 11 years ago and felt lost without her theatre world. Within five years, she was diagnosed with vascular dementia which later brought on epilepsy.

Granddaughter Kirsty Louise Fields, 27, said: “My nan, my best friend, my world - we shared many precious moments and I’ll carry these with me forever.

“Goodbyes are not forever, I miss her more than I can say.”

Others took to Facebook to express their condolences.

Paul Moorhouse wrote: “You were my Southend mum and Auntie Jean to so many who loved you. Auntie Jean was one of the loveliest and kindest ladies you could meet, and loved by so many of us both at the Cliffs and by visiting companies.”

Trudy Crumley added: “I’m so very sad to hear of the passing of Auntie Jean. She was so lovely and I loved working with her behind the kiosk at the Empire and making teas for the Players.

Beach Davies wrote: “Aunty Jean was the biggest star that ever worked at the Cliffs Pavilion. Aunt to local crew, visiting crews and stars alike. She made the best tea in the business too. She’s now probably having a wicked laugh with her granddaughter Jodie. Rest in peace Jean Williams.”

Jean’s funeral will be held on Wednesday at 3.20pm at the West Chapel at Southend Crematorium. Everyone is welcome to celebrate her life.
