THURROCK Council is hosting a meeting later this month which is aimed at exploring what life in the borough is like for lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender people.

There is no support group in Thurrock for the LGBT community and the meeting will see whether there is enough interest to set one up.

Lyn Carpenter, Thurrock Council’s Chief Executive said: “The meeting is open to anybody who identifies themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

“The council has already been working with Stonewall, the UK’s leading LGBT+ charity, to encourage a more supportive and informed environment for council staff and is looking to ensure links are now made with the wider community to help tackle discrimination, promote equality and to support LGBT+ people with any issues they face here.”

She added: “Members of the council’s LGBT+ staff forum will be at the meeting and those with experience of working with LGBT+ people are also welcome to come along.”

The event, which is being supported by Stonewall and Thurrock Community and Voluntary Services (TCVS) will be held on Thursday 15 June. Anybody interested in attending can find more information at thurrock.gov.uk/events.
