A DISABLED one-year-old is set to receive the night care he desperately needs, but his family must raise enough money for an extension first.

Edward Hewitt, known as Teddy, who lives in Eastwood, has a currently undiagnosed condition which has left him with epilepsy and unable to swallow, meaning he needs round-the-clock care.

His family is urgently trying to raise money for an extension to provide a bedroom and wet room for Teddy.

The fundraising is now more important than ever, as night care is unable to start until Teddy has his own room downstairs.

Mum Nikke Hewitt, said: “We have been approved for four nights a week by the clinical commissioning group, which is fantastic news.

“We had been rejected twice in the past, so it is a huge relief, but we need this conversion and the downstairs bedroom before the night nurse can start.” Mrs Hewitt’s home currently has just a living room and a kitchen downstairs.

Teddy has the development of a newborn with limited control of his limbs and no head control.

He cannot eat and is being fed through a tube.

He also uses a wheelchair.

Nikke added: “His condition has evolved a bit, so he is now on oxygen for three quarters of the day.

“It is helping with the seizures a lot, it had got really bad over the last month or so.

“He was having muscle spasms so regularly, I didn’t sleep more than an hour a night for 10 days.”

So far, the family have raised more than £4,500 but have set themselves a target of £15,000 so they can pay for the conversion themselves.
