A car has crashed along a road residents claim is a notorious area for speeding.

The front of the silver car was left badly damaged and has now been left parked on the side of road at the junction of Central Wall Road and Elder Tree Avenue in Canvey.

It is unclear what caused the collision, thought to have happened on Saturday, but residents said a lot of people speed through the one way system.

Beryl Warren, 79, of Central Wall Road, said: “I saw the car when I was going out but I don’t know what happened.

“The speeding along here is terrible.

“They just speed round and round the roads but there are never any police available to stop it. It is very, very bad. It is worse at night because you can hear them screeching past.”

It is not clear if speed was a factor in this crash.

She added that this was not the first accident along the road.

A man died in hospital after he had collapsed behind the wheel last year and crashed into their garden. Sadly the driver died later in hospital.

There have been a number of other accidents in the area, including in April when a car hit a lamp post.

Thankfully no-one was seriously injured in the collision.

Several years ago, residents living at the junction called for speed restrictions on the corner, but a council survey found that speeding was not an issue.

John Anderson, Canvey Island Independent Party councillor for central ward, said he wasn’t aware of any issues with speeding on the island.

He said: “It is not a major issue as far as I’m aware. Some councillors would like to see speed restrictions near schools.”
