A FAKE charity collector conned her way into a pensioner’s home and stole her jewellery.

The victim, 74, who lives in Beldowes, Basildon, said the woman knocked on her door claiming to be collecting money for deaf children.

The con artist then asked if she could use the toilet before leaving.

The grandmother later found two pairs of gold earrings had been taken.

The woman’s grandson, who asked not to be named, said: “My nan is OK now, but she is very upset with this lady.

“She’s had those earrings for four years and they mean a lot to her. I would like to try get the earrings back or the money to get her some back.”

Chris Evans, chief officer for Basildon, Billericay and Wickford Voluntary Service, said residents and charities need to take safety precautions.

He said: “Residents need to remember don’t open any doors to strangers. Our charity issues letters to donors in advance to let them know our staff members will be going to their house to collect donations.

“We name our staff members in the letter, and staff members have a copy too so they can show the donors to confirm their ID. It’s just to protect both sides.”

Steve Ward, Ukip councillor representing Pitsea Southeast, urged residents to stay vigilant.

He said: “There are a lot of people out there who prey on the elderly because they are vulnerable and lonely. Don’t be afraid to ask for ID.

“People come up with different tricks to con people. Some people pretend to sell things and find an excuse to enter your home. They come in to check if have a backdoor so they can plan their escape.

“I encourage people to install CCTV cameras. You can ask the person to face to camera to ID themselves. If they’ve nothing to hide, they won’t question you.”
