Basildon star Alison Moyet is re-releasing her first hit more than 30 years after it was a success due to public demand after it featured on a Christmas advert.

Moyet and former Depeche Mode keyboardist Vince Clarke, who also grew up in Basildon, performed together as Yazoo, and originally released indie pop hit Only You in 1982.

Upon its UK release, the single became an instant success, hitting number two on the UK Singles Chart.

This paved the way for continued success, and they won a Brit Award in 1983 for Best British breakthrough act.

Despite their success with Yazoo, the duo split in May 1983 due to a combination of Clarke’s reluctance to make more records under the Yazoo name, a clash of personalities, and a lack of communication between the pair.

The song remained a popular hit, but has seen a huge resurgence in popularity after being chosen to feature in the Boots Christmas advert, which was filmed in Tilbury.

The advert features two sisters and the memories they have shared growing up together.

The song was the first chart hit for Alison Moyet, who was born in Billericay and grew up in Basildon.

Her website has officially announced they will be releasing the 2017 version of the song due to high demand.

A post reads: “You may have heard Alison Moyet’s instantly-recognisable voice on the Boots’ Christmas TV advert, replete with a glorious new orchestrated backing track, on the timeless Yazoo classic, Only You.

“Or on its world radio exclusive on Graham Norton’s Radio 2 show. Now due to public demand, we are delighted to announce that the full-length version is now available to download.

“And it will be on streaming very soon.”

The news has delighted fans – both new and old – who are rushing to buy the single.

There are plans to release it outside of the UK soon.

It is already currently number 51 in the Official Singles Downloads Chart Top 100 and is set to keep climbing as it reaches out to a new, younger audience.

Moyet is currently undertaking a world tour, which has included a trip down memory lane for the Blues’ fan as she performed at Southend’s Cliffs Pavilion – a popular venue from her past growing up in south Essex.

She recalled fondly her memories of going to the Cliffs Pavilion as a child and said playing there was one of the highlights of her world tour.

Moyet also features as a guest artist in A-Ha’s new acoustic album, released last month.
