“Invisible” roundabouts that drivers are failing to notice will soon cause a serious crash, it is feared.

Whitmore Way, in Basildon, has six roundabouts along the length of the road, and residents fear the majority are so worn down drivers are struggling to see them.

Jean Keeling, 78, who lives on the road, fears it won’t be long until a serious accident occurs because the road markings are not being adhered to.

She contacted Essex County Council, but was told the issue was low priority.

Mrs Keeling said: “It is dangerous. The road is very well used, and we have the school just round the corner so there is lots of drop off and pick up traffic.

“But drivers either drive straight through the roundabouts, or treat it like a T-junction.

“Half the time, all three cars sit there waiting, and then inevitably go at the same time.

“It will cause an accident,

“I almost had a collision with a bus the other day because the driver was paying no attention to the roundabout.

“I feel uncomfortable driving along there.

“All it needs is a bit of paint and it will make such a big difference for everyone. It’s so dangerous.”

Out of the six roundabouts, the two at Church Road, and Theydon Crescent, are worst affected.

An Essex Highways spokesperson said: “Whitmore Way mini-roundabouts and zebra crossings are on our lining repainting priority list.

“However, there are delays at this time of year as the temperatures and the amount of salt on the roads limit how much lining we can do. Some of the lining crews also work as gritter drivers, but this work is likely to be done quickly when the weather improves.”
