The skies over south Essex could be lit up by shooting stars tonight as the Geminid meteor shower reaches its peak.

The display in December 2016 was washed out by the supermoon which rose at the same time, but clear skies permitting, the Geminids will be most visible tonight (Wednesday Dec 13 and tomorrow morning).

The Geminids are among the top meteor showers because of the brightness of the individual meteors and at its peak can see up to 120 meteors an hour shoot across the sky.

Nasa say that the best time to see shower is before dawn, but you will be able to see them as early as sunset today.

In Essex, the sun will set at around 3.48pm, so keep watching the skies from then.
