Nearly 100 young people have been recognised by friends and group leaders for their achievements and the work they do in their community.

The Jack Petchey achievement awards were hosted at The Paddocks in Long Road, Canvey where 89 young people aged 11 to 25 received the award.

Brian Wood, mayor of Castle Point presented the awards to the young people.

He said: “It is good to see so many people, especially youngsters that want to achieve more or help others to achieve more rather than drift along.

“I was honoured and pleased to be invited to present the awards to them for all they have achieved.”

All of the recipients were presented with medallions and a framed certificate of the award.

Each winner also received a £250 cheque to go towards school trips, new sporting equipment or to help fund their community groups.

Ten adults were also celebrated with ‘leader awards’.

Jack Petchey, 92, an entrepreneur who founded the award, said: “I am passionate about our awards scheme which enables young people to be recognised, valued and rewarded for their achievements and positive contributions to society.”
