A drink driver has been jailed and banned from driving following members of the public stopping him from fleeing the scene.

Officers were called to Eastern Avenue in Southend after Quang Vanbui’s grey Mercedes collided with another vehicle at around 7pm on Sunday, July 8.

He tried to leave the scene of the crash but members of the public detained him until a nearby police unit arrived.

He blew twice the drink drive limit whilst in custody and provided false details.

Vanbui, 43, from Dove Road, East London appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Tuesday, July 10, where he pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance and obstructing an officer by providing false details.

He was jailed for a total of eight weeks, disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

PC Dean Young said: “Vanbui’s actions were thoughtless and put the safety of other road users at risk.

“There is no excuse for drink-driving. Thankfully no one was injured.

“I’m also grateful to the members of the public who put their own safety at risk to stop Vanbui from leaving the scene.

“He now has some time in prison to reflect on his dangerous actions.”
