A university student who left a nightclub after telling friends she felt unwell returned home and killed herself.

Ellie Campbell, 18, from Basildon, had been out with friends when she suddenly decided to go home alone.

The first year undergraduate who was studying at Canterbury Christ Church University greeted a security guard at her halls with a hug instead of her usual fist bump when she arrived, an inquest hearing heard.

When her friends got home they had security help them get into her room - but Ellie was found hanging in the shower room, Kent Live reports.

The inquest heard she was rushed to hospital but scans revealed her brain activity was 'incompatible with life'.

She was taken off life support and died on January 29.

The psychology student had no history of self-harm and no known mental health conditions.

Assistant coroner Katrina Hepburn recorded a conclusion of suicide and passed on her condolences to Ellie's family and friends.

Ms Hepburn added Ellie was known as an 'outstanding student committed to her studies'.

She said: 'The evidence in this case is that there was nothing untoward leading up to her death. She went to the club and then her demeanour changed.

'Her mood changed and she decided to leave alone. The evidence is that it was unusual for her to go home alone.

'Given the state of intoxication, the balance of her mind was disturbed, but I find she did at that time intend to take her own life.'
