STREET racers have been competing along a notorious road on Canvey.

Essex Police launched an appeal for information after receiving reports of a large amount of cars and people congregating in Roscommon Way.

The large group were taking part in street racing along the straight road, a problem which has seen people injured in the past.

Ray Howard, Castle Point councillor for Canvey West overheard the noise from Roscommon Way on Sunday night, when the suspected races were taking place.

He said: “They do not seem to have any care or recognition for the community on Canvey.

“If it is not motorbikes going through the town causing an awful amount of noise and danger, it is Roscommon Way.

“I am convinced that when phase three of the build in Roscommon Way is complete it will be a main road for lorries and other vehicles and it will bring this to an end.

“I am not a violent man, but if we could crush the vehicles or motorbikes owned by the people doing this, it would send out a real statement.”

Following the incident, which was reported to have happened after 10pm on Friday, police released a warning.

Sgt Simon Willshire, from the Chigwell Roads Policing Unit, said: “Street racing is dangerous and puts at risk the safety of those taking part and those watching.

“We will support car enthusiasts to socialise but in appropriate places and with respect to the local community.

“What we won’t tolerate is those who cross the line, driving in a way which is either anti-social or reckless.

“Anyone doing this will be dealt with robustly.

“Our enquiries to identify those taking part on Friday night are progressing but I want to speak to anyone with any information about the event.

“I particularly want to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything, has CCTV or was driving in the area and has dash cam footage.”

In a major incident in 2017, Conner Youngs, 23, of Lower Road, Hockley was banned from driving after he lost control of a Lexus LS400 and crashed into a lamppost in the road. The crash left two passengers with serious injuries. It is feared they will not be the last people hurt.
