AN infants school has celebrated a hugely successful year after it has become one of the best sporting schools in the borough.

West Leigh Infants School in Ronald Hill Grove, Leigh commended its pupils after the key stage one students won first place in the borough sports competition and sportshall athletics.

The school said that the pupils' performance in sport has come on "leaps and bounds" in the past year after the teachers implemented a host of new schemes.

Emily Watts, a spokesman for the school, said: "We’ve focussed the past year and a half on improving the children’s fitness and also on their ability to do basic skills such as skipping, throwing and catching.

"We have implemented the Daily Mile, which the children run every day and daily fitness sessions for KS1 children."

As well as winning top spot as a school in two big competitions, the school's year two girls cross country team also claimed first place in their borough cross country competition.

In other sports, the school has continued to excel.

The tag rugby team took first place in another competition and the football and cricket teams were also awarded third place.

Ms Watts added: "We feel this is a reflection of our hard work to improve the children’s fitness and the children’s achievements and improvements should be celebrated!

"A few years ago, we wouldn’t have got near to winning some of these events.

"We haven’t let the lack of space we have at West Leigh hold us back!"
