SPECIAL club nights are being organised for mentally and physically disabled people to help them make friends and have fun.

Combined Disability Disco (CDD) has now been running for eight years on Canvey and offers a fun place for those of all ages with disabilities to dance and relax.

Events are held at the Venue Bar, next to the Haystack, Canvey, which is set up as a proper nightclub, with DJ Paul Kelly, bar and dance floor.

The venue has great facilities including a stage and radio mics so those in attendance can perform karaoke from a great list of songs to chose from.

The venue also has local artists performing on the last Tuesday of the month, including Monkey’s Wedding and Joanne Martin.

Those attending the organised discos are encouraged to join the acts on stage to sing and dance.

Organiser Tony Thorne, 72, said: “It’s all about having fun and it’s great to see everybody getting involved.”

As well as the weekly events, there are also themed club nights, including at Christmas and Halloween where attendees are welcome to dress up.

The group focuses on bringing together people to help develop their confidence and social skills.

Mr Thorne said: “Disabled people are often segregated and only socialise with others sharing their disability.

“At CDD we think it is important to bring together all disabled people and we find they get on very well.”

The event has an average weekly turnout of 30 people with carers and family members as extra and hopes to expand as the venue has a capacity of 200.

Parents, carers and other family members are strongly encouraged to come along to get support.

They have the opportunity to socialise with others who are in the same situation as themselves.

CDD works with various support groups that specialise in helping those living with disabilities and their families.

The group meets every Tuesday between 7pm and 9pm at the Canvey venue.

The event costs £3 per person with parents and carers free.

Tickets can be bought on the door.

The venue has wheelchair access so that everybody can enjoy the event.

Events are taking place throughout the summer holidays.
