A POPULAR community facility has been granted permission to stay in place for another year - despite recent concerns over its future.

The owners of Stay and Splash, based at The Paddocks Community Centre, in Long Road, Canvey, had feared they would be closed down due to Castle Point Council’s plans to redevelop the site.

However, they were pleased to announce they will be able to open next year.

Stay and Splash owner Sarah Walby, 44, of Lee Chapel South, Basildon, announced the news on social media in a post reading: “We have exciting news to announce.

“Castle Point Council have very kindly agreed to extend Stay and Splash at the Paddocks for another year.

“Stay and Splash will continue next year!

“Don’t forget weather permitting we are open everyday until the end of September.

“Thank you all so much for your efforts and continued support.”

Residents were also thrilled, with many saying it was “great news” and claiming it would be a “huge mistake” if it was closed down.

The attraction is hugely popular on the island and is always very busy.

The Paddocks Community Centre regeneration has been an ongoing saga on the island after it was branded “beyond repair” by Castle Point Council.

The council is planning to build a new community facility next door to the current Paddocks and is finalising the details of its business plan.

When this was finished, the old Paddocks would then be knocked down.

However, residents fear the council has an ulterior motive and will actually build a number of houses on the site, which they are firmly against.

Many residents have complained of being “kept in the dark” over the plans.

Castle Point Council has insisted a full consultation will take place once the plans have been revealed.

The council has said the plans should be released to the public in September.
