STAFF and volunteers have been praised for their work at the current Havens Hospices as a date is announced for work on the new site to begin.
Fair Havens Hospice will be breaking ground for its new site in Priory Crescent, Prittlewell on Monday, October 8. It is expected to open in 2020.
With one eye on the future the hospice has been recognising those who have made an exceptional effort in the past and present.
Sally Scarnell received a long service award after working in Little Havens kitchen for 20 years. Her Sprocker Spaniel Ben has been a therapy pet for five years.
Sally said: “The children love Ben, they tug on his tail and cuddle him and if the children have sight difficulties we describe him to them. He is so easy-going and I can see the children get so much.”
Also recognised was Pearl Naylor, 93, from Thorpe Bay, who has been volunteering for 35 years.
Pearl said: “I’m overwhelmed - I don’t feel I’m that special, but I’ve loved every minute of volunteering at Fair Havens.” The awards were presented on Wednesday.
