Doors and windows must be kept shut, firefighers have urged after a huge fire at a recycling centre.

Fire crews have said those living near Oliver Road, Grays must keep their doors and windows closed, after the fire this morning had drivers on the Dartford Bridge reportedly seeing the smoke.

Firefighters are still at the scene, and are continuing to battle with removing the smoke from the building so crews can access the 15 metre high rubbish file.

Seven fire engines are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is yet unknown.

A spokesman for the fire service, said: "Firefighters were called to a fire at a recycling site in West Thurrock this morning.

"On arrival, crews reported seeing smoke coming from the building on-site, which measured approximately 60m x 60m.

"Crews are working to extinguish the fire within the building, which is a rubbish pile measuring 15m x 15m, and are using a mechanical digger to remove rubbish from the building to dampen down outside."

"Firefighters are extinguishing the fire in sections. 

"If you live in the area, please keep windows and doors shut."
