THE council has issued an update on two council workers who were left seriously injured after a car ploughed into three ride-on lawnmowers five days ago

On Friday, two members of Southend Council’s parks team were rushed to hospital after the incident in a serious condition after the crash on Royal Artillery Way.

Yesterday, the council confirmed that both members of the team were in a stable condition position.

The families of the two victims, as well as their colleagues who were present at the time of the crash, are receiving support from the council in the aftermath of the crash.

The road was closed more than ten hours after the crash at 7.40am on Friday.

A council spokesman said: “Following the road collision on Friday involving colleagues from our parks team, we can confirm that both staff members are responding well to treatment, and are in a stable condition.

“Both members of staff, their families and colleagues who witnessed what happened have been receiving support from the council and are all grateful for the thoughts and well wishes they have received.

“Once again, we extend our thanks to colleagues in the emergency services for their swift action at the scene, and their actions and support since then.”

A 24-year-old man from Benfleet was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

He has since been released on bail until July 1.

Essex Police has continued to appeal for witnesses to come forward who could help the police investigation.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “Officers are investigating a serious crash in Southend. We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything or have any dashcam footage to contact us, quoting incident number 187 of April 19.”
