THIS is the first image of how a new housing complex set for the former Ford headquarters in Basildon town centre could look.

The artist impression reveals plans to transform Trafford House, in Cherrydown East, into 359 flats, set within landscaped terraces and gardens.

Under the plans, Cherrydown East will become a tree-lined street, and shops will be built in Station Way.

Developer Colonnade, which is also behind the stalled redevelopment of the Laindon Cen-tre has submitted a planning application to Basildon Council.

Spokesman Godfrey Bradman said: “We believe the proposal is a major step forward for the continuing enhancement of the town centre.

“The present building is outdated. It’s heavy facade makes it dark and unwelcoming. Our plans will transform it into a light, airy place to live.”

The last Ford workers left Trafford House earlier this year. It was built in 1974 and in its heyday was home to more than 800 Ford workers.

London-based architect firm Siddell Gibson wants to maintain the structure of the building, but strip and reclad the exterior.

Another storey will be added to the top of the building and turned into penthouse flats.

Basildon councillors hailed the plans as an endorsement of their efforts to regenerate the town centre.

Stephen Horgan, deputy leader and head of regeneration at Basildon Council said: “We’re very pleased there is a project to utilise Trafford House. It shows confidence in the town centre and Basildon is a prime place for good-quality accommodation.

“These will probably be the nicest flats in Basildon and I’m sure they won’t just be for people from outside the district.”

Mr Horgan added if the plans were approved, the council would ensure the developer provided affordable housing, but said it would not necessarily be at the Trafford House site.

Tony Ball, leader of Basildon Council added: “I think these plans look very exciting. It’s making use of an empty building and will help encourage people to live in the town centre by offering aspirational housing.”

The plans will go before the council’s planning committee later this year.
