MOTORISTS could be at risk of accidents because of the poor condition of a road in Laindon, councillors have said.

Basildon councillors Phil and Pat Rackley have complained to Essex County Council about a series of “dangerous” holes in Bedford Road.

However, Essex County Council has said it has no immediate plans to repair the road, but added the county had spent more than £9million repairing potholes this year.

Mrs Rackley said: “It’s got worse over the past four or five months, but certainly a lot worse just in the last six weeks.”

She said she believed it was almost three decades since the road had been resurfaced.

She said: “Phil and I have talked, and we’ve been here 27 years and we can’t remember it being resurfaced.

“Certainly it hasn’t been done since we’ve been here.”

The road, commonly used as a shortcut between Durham Road and Somerset Road, is in a 30mph zone.

Mrs Rackley said: “It’s a busy little road. The surface has gone right down to the concrete base in some areas.

“If you were to go along it a little bit quickly, it’s certainly a hazard.”

An Essex County Council spokeswoman indicated the repairs were not a priority.

She said: “Following an investigation on September 6, work in Bedford Road is not considered urgent.

“In order to ensure safety and minimise disruption to the road network while repairs are being carried out, the county council prioritises work on defects that present the most immediate safety risk.” She said £9.3million had been invested in improving county roads this year, with teams carrying out repairs daily.
