BILLY Coyne's early dismissal set the tone for a disappointing afternoon for Concord as they were knocked out of the FA Trophy following a 2-0 defeat by Enfield Town.

The right-back was shown a straight red card for a handball which led to Liam Hope firing the visitors into an 11th minute lead.

Concord always looked capable of getting something out of the game until Joe O'Brien fired home Enfield's second with 12 minutes to go after the hosts failed to deal with a corner.

After a cagey start, Enfield took the lead when former Hornchurch man Jonathan Hunt's corner was stabbed goalwards and Coyne instinctively used both hands to push it away.

Referee Paul Howard gave Coyne his marching orders and Hope calmly rolled the resulting spot kick into the bottom right corner.

The Beachboys responded well and skipper Tony Stokes went close when his close-range stab from Danny Glozier's cross forced Noel Imber into a good reaction save.

But Enfield weather the storm and for the remainder of the half used Hunt intelligently to exploit the space down the left flank created by Coyne's dismissal.

Hunt set up good chances for Liam Hope and former Concord man Lee White, before he cut inside himself a minute before the break, only to see his drive hit the back of team-mate Joe O'Brien.

Only a fantastic tip over from Imber kept out Stokes' stinging drive from Harry Elmes' lay-off on 55 minutes as Concord pushed for an equaliser.

The Beachboys replaced Danny Spendlove with the more attack-minded Jason Hallett on 64 minutes and soon after he cut inside but fired over.

The hosts had vociferous appeals for a penalty turned down when Stokes was left on the floor by Michael Ewang, and then former Concord man Tyler Cambell saw his curler come back off the bar at the other end.

But Enfield did not have to wait much longer for their second as Craig McKay's header from Hunt's corner forced Jordan into a good parry, and Joe O'Brien smashed the loose ball in off the underside of the bar.

Hallett had a great chance to set up an interesting finish but he dragged well wide of the advancing Imber and post when clean through on goal.
