BILLERICAY Town manager Craig Edwards says he couldn’t ask for more than seven wins on the bounce ahead of his side’s most important game of the season so far on Saturday.

Town welcome Chippenham Town in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup, looking to reach the final qualification stage for the first time in nine years.

They went on to reach the first round that season, losing to Swansea City, and Edwards wants to make Saturday another day to remember, following Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory over Folkestone Invicta.

That was Town’s seventh consecutive win in all competitions but Edwards is taking nothing for granted and says there is still plenty to work on ahead of the clash with the Southern Premier League outfit.

“I like to be able to have something to work with and that is the case,” he said. “I was disappointed with performance on Tuesday and the last 30 minutes against Worthing on Saturday so we have something to get into them.

“We know it will be tough and we have suffered against Southern League sides in the past. Chippenham got a good result this week and we will need to be at our best.

“But you can’t ask for more than going into a game off the back of seven wins.”

Edwards has turned around Billericay’s fortunes after they lost four league games on the bounce and won just one of their first six matches.

But he said it shouldn’t have come as a big surprise after he all but rebuilt the entire squad over the summer following a number of exits.

“When you get a new group in it takes time,” he said. “We play a certain way and have a lot of disciplines that must be followed. Understanding each other’s games takes time.

“We have changed the system and getting them to do their job is hard. They must understand their role and their fellow players’ role.

“We didn’t do it as well as normal against Folkestone and they dictated to how we played in the second-half.

“We needed to impose ourselves. But I have learned a lot from it.

“Now we want to make it eight in the big one on Saturday.”
