BASILDON United caused a huge upset by beating Canvey Island to reach the quarter-finals of the Essex Senior Cup.

Taylor Sinfield and Nathan Dewberry got the goals to dump out Danny Heale’s side.

The Gulls handed a start to goalkeeper Conor Gough, his first since suffering a work-related finger injury in September, and he wasn’t overly tested in the first period.

That said there was not a lot between the sides, as the Essex Senior League outfit impressed against Canvey, two divisions above them.

Both sides had chances in the first-half but the breakthrough didn’t come until 52 minutes.

Sinfield was on hand to tap home and 12 minutes later it got even better for the Bees.

Dewberry smashed a low shot in from 25 yards to double the lead and although Jack Lampe hit the post for Canvey, Basildon were worthy winners.

Sam Higgins scored a hat-trick as East Thurrock United thrashed Bowers & Pitsea 6-1.

A strong East Thurrock side marched into the last eight with a comfortable victory over the Ryman North side.

First-half goals from Higgins, plus an own goal from Aaron Waters put Rocks well in control at the interval.

Higgins added a second and third for himself, before two goals in the final seven minutes put some gloss on the scoreline.

Teddy Nesbitt scored before Harry Honesty completed the scoring.

Billericay Town are also through after a 2-0 win over Brightlingsea Regent.

Town were nursing a number of injuries ahead of kick-off, and Regent were the better side in the first period.

Jack Giddens was forced into several smart saves, although Lewis Taaffe was only denied a first Billericay goal by a save up the other end.

But the best chance of the half fell to the visitors but Michael Bakare’s penalty was struck off target.

But, shortly after the break, Bakare did find his range and netted a second shortly afterwards as Town progressed.
