STEVE Sheehan is hoping Canvey Island can continue to preserve their unbeaten run on artificial surfaces when they make the trip to Worthing tonight.

The defender scored an 87th minute winner against Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday to hand the Gulls their first win since November 26.

And a win tonight would lift Canvey out of the Ryman Premier League relegation places, albeit they face a tough ask against a Worthing side unbeaten in 12 matches in all competitions.

But Sheehan, 26, has said if they show the same fight as they did against promotion-chasing Dulwich then there is no reason they cannot come away from the south coast with something to show for their efforts.

“It was a hard game as Dulwich are a good side,” he said. “We rode our luck and the goalkeeper was very good. We need to stay in games at the moment and in the end it was a bit of a smash and grab.

“That is not to say we didn’t work hard as they had more chances but we nicked the result.

“But we can’t get carried away. We start tonight’s match with a point and we need to try and end it with one or three.

“I looked at Worthing’s form and they are unbeaten for a while so it will be hard. The 3G pitch shouldn’t play a part as we have done well on them so far this season.

“But we need to set up to take a point on our travels and anything on top of that is a bonus.

“We are not a brilliant side because we won one match so we just have to see how we go. We have a chance if we play in the same manner as Saturday.”

And Sheehan admitted it was nice to go into work the following day and talk about a victory, following a number of recent losses.

“When I go to work people never seem to ask how you got on when you do well,” he said. “But they always ask we have been smashed which isn’t ideal.

“It has been difficult and it is when you’re down there.

“But we will get our rewards if we continue to show the right work ethic and get a bit of luck as well.”
