CANVEY Island earned their biggest win of the season as they crushed Met Police 4-0 to keep alive their Ryman Premier League survival hopes.

The Gulls were hugely impressive, dragging Met Police into the struggle at the bottom in the process.

It was a crunch clash at the bottom of the standings, with the Gulls aware of the significance of a good result against a side also looking to secure their league status.

And Canvey were bright early on. Simon Thomas fed George Sykes and the striker’s effort was pushed wide by Met Police goalkeeper Brannon Daly.

Thomas came within inches of getting onto the end of an Ashley Dumas cross, as the away side continued to dictate the early exchanges.

But Dumas’ delivery was soon to bear fruit. The left-back sent in a great free-kick and Steve Sheehan powered home on the volley.

Thomas sent a header wide as Canvey ended the first half on top.

The same duo that combined for the first goal should have brought about the second as well.

Dumas’ delivery was met by Sheehan but his flick arrowed just off target.

The left-back was having an impact at both ends. He prevented Mekhail McLaughlin from levelling with a crucial goal-line clearance.

And the interception’s significance became more apparent five minutes later.

A slip in defence allowed Harrison Chatting a run at goal and he found the bottom corner.

And the Gulls were in dream land seven minutes later, with Sykes adding his name to the scoresheet.

The winger hurdled two challenges and drove the ball inside the near post.

Captain Ryan Blackman added a fourth to put some gloss on the scoreline with with 10 minutes remaining following a swift counter-attack on a fine day for Danny Heale’s men.
