CANVEY Island captain Steve Sheehan has urged his team-mates to keep their feet on the ground ahead of tonight’s big encounter with Burgess Hill Town.

The Gulls beat Met Police 4-0 on Saturday to record their most emphatic result of the season, albeit the remain second from bottom and two points from safety.

They are now seven points behind tonight’s opponents, although have played four more games than the Surrey team.

And Sheehan, who scored on Saturday, says the team are aware of the match’s significance.

“I hope the result doesn’t give us too much confidence,” he said. “We must still keep our eye on what we need to do. It was a good result on Saturday but it means nothing when we play Burgess Hill.

“The performance levels haven’t been great lately and even when we have won it has often been off the cuff.

“We changed the way we played and we did brilliantly on Saturday. We were leading at half-time and questions often get asked about us having contrasting halves.

“So it was pleasing to see us perform even better and punish a team as well.

“We rode our luck at the start of the second-half and in other weeks we could have gone 3-1 down but we had a bit of belief and luck, which we are owed.”

The 26-year-old centre back seems to be something of a lucky charm when he gets on the scoresheet.

The last two times he has netted Canvey have won and kept a clean sheet, both rare occurrences this season.

But Sheehan says it is about the team, and he added he was pleased to see some familiar faces back in the team.

“I am not going to complain with a goal and a clean sheet as they have been really rare.

“Keeping it tight at the back helps from the whole team so getting Conor Gough back is important.

“He has a big presence and a big booming voice.

“Getting some familiar faces back in him and Jay Curran could be really big for us. It really matters to these guys and that is who we need in this position.”

Burgess Hill Town meanwhile are in a rich vein of form, having taken 10 points from the last 12 on offer.

Town have beaten Enfield, AFC Sudbury and Leatherhead in the past fortnight, and will fancy their chances against the Gulls.

But Sheehan has said all he and his team can do is focus on the task at hand.

“Burgess Hill are a team in good form,” he said. “But there is nothing we can do about that except go and play the game.

“We believe in ourselves and know what we need to do.”
