CANVEY Island chairman John Batch says no-one at the club is heading into the final game of the season 'fearful' of the outcome.

The Gulls know they must beat already relegated AFC Sudbury and hope other results go their way if they are to avoid dropping into the Ryman North tomorrow.

But Batch, who is also the club's Director of Football, says everyone is looking forward to the match.

"It is an important game but they have all been significant," he said. "We beat Wingate & Finchley two seasons ago to stay up and let's hope we can do it again. We are playing well and two games ago were top of the form guide.

"But we are not fearing the game, albeit we need favours from elsewhere.

"We definitely think one of the other teams can help us out. Footballers are competitive people and they are driven to win, no matter their situation."

Batch added he was not concerned the impact relegation would have on the club's new £300,000 clubhouse.

"The clubhouse is there for the community as well as the football club," he said. "The popularity of it has been excellent and that will not change. But, on match days it is more important we stay up of course.

"We are all optimistic though."
