BILLY Roast says a move to Concord Rangers is a perfect platform to get back into the Football League.

The 22-year-old centre-back was named Isthmian North defender of the year last season after an outstanding season for Maldon & Tiptree.

Roast fell just short of promotion - losing 1-0 in the play-off final against Thurrock - but won a host of admirers, including Concord.

And he said he was pleased to make the move.

“It is a good move and I have heard a lot of good things,” he said.

“I heard good things from players at Colchester that had spent time at Concord so felt it would make sense.

“I met with Adam (Flanagan) and we got on well and I think he has some good ideas.

“I know (new signing) Jordan Sanderson as we used to play together at Colchester.

“But I am looking forward to it, and meeting some exciting new players.”

Central defender Roast admitted last year was a satisfying one on a personal level after linking up with Maldon from Colchester United.

And he said he has enjoyed his non-league experience over the last two seasons.

“We had a positive season at Maldon,” said the former U’s Under-21 captain.

“Personally I won some awards and I think this move is a step closer back into the Football League.

“That is my ultimate goal and I get it must be done in stages.

“I was at Colchester for eight years, but played at Maldon for the last two years and played a great deal last season.

“We learned a lot last year,” he added.

“It was heartbreaking for the lads to lose the way we did but it is a good learning curve this early in our career.

“Now, I am doing some little bits to be ready for pre-season.

“I want to be ready.”
