GREAT Wakering Rovers manager Iain O’Connell says he is encouraged by the form of his strikers ahead of the start of the new Essex Senior League season.

O’Connell’s squad boasts a number of talented forwards, including Billy Johnson, Steve Butterworth, Neil Richmond and Rhys Fatts.

Springfield forward Adam Vyse, 25, has also linked up with the club, impressing in pre-season and netting in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Witham Town.

And O’Connell is pleased with the addition.

“Adam is big and strong and has impressed me so far,” he said.

“He has played three and scored two so far and he could be a big player for us.

“I am looking at a lad from Catholic United as well called Luke Winter and I am pleased with our preparations.”

O’Connell also offered thanks to club president Roger Burroughs for his support.

He also revealed that Dave Patient – assistant manager to O’Connell last season – was the new ‘football chairman’ following John Galley’s departure as club chairman.

“I want to offer thanks to the president as he has got behind us and helped us out financially, in terms of kit and tracksuit,” he said.

“And he has backed me as well, which I always appreciate.

“Dave Patient is the football chairman, as opposed to the club chairman,” he added.

“He will deal with football matters only and that is positive for me. I want to deal with what happens on the pitch and I know I will be able to do that.

“I know Dave very well and we have worked together for many years. I am excited about things moving forward.”
