CANVEY Island eased to a 4-1 victory over Dereham Town to continue their recent resurgence in the Isthmian North.

Mitchell Gilbey, George Craddock and Georges Sykes were on target for Canvey.

The Gulls were put under early pressure by the Norfolk outfit, with Henry Newcombe the first goalkeeper to be called into action.

Rhys Logan sent an effort at goal which was well tipped away.

Steve Sheehan’s header was over the crossbar, and Gilbey and Elliot Warren also had good chances to open the scoring.

But it was Canvey that forged ahead before the interval.

Sykes jockeyed several challenges and squared for Gilbey to thrash home the loose ball.

The Gulls were impressing and were worthy of their second goal when it arrived.

Ten minutes into the second-half, Sykes and Gilbey combined for Craddock to strike home.

Gilbey twice came close to stretching the advantage before Sykes did just that.

The forward was picked out by Sam Collins and he rounded the keeper to make the game safe.

Sykes scored a fourth, benefitting from good work by substitute Charlie Cole.

Dereham scored a consolation through Dave Hinton but it was Canvey’s night.
