CANVEY Island's promotion hopes took a hit as they were defeated by Isthmian North strugglers Norwich United.

The hosts raced into a comfortable lead, with striker Liam Jackson notching all four of Norwich's goals.

Mitchell Gilbey hit back from the penalty spot, while George Sykes scored twice late on to give Danny Heale's side some hope.

But the visitors were unable to claim an unlikely point at Plantation Park.

Jackson put the home side, who went into the clash second from bottom of the Isthmian North standings, in front after 14 minutes.

And he doubled his tally just before the half hour mark.

Jackson completed his hat-trick two minutes after the break, while he netted his fourth with 63 minutes on the clock.

However, Gilbey converted from the penalty spot two minutes later to give the Gulls some hope.

Sykes found a way past Norwich goalkeeper Andy Wilton as the match ticked into the 90th minute.

And the striker, who rejoined from Braintree Town just weeks after departing in the summer, netted again moments later.

But Canvey were unable to net a fourth goal to claim a share of the spoils.
