BILLERICAY Town manager Glenn Tamplin believes tonight’s Essex Senior Cup win was crucial ahead of the final six weeks of the season.

Town beat Chelmsford City 2-1 thanks to goals from Robbie Evans and Calum Butcher.

And Tamplin believes his team were worthy winners against the National League South outfit. He added he felt it was more significant than last season’s Isthmian League Cup win because of a poor recent run of results.

“I enjoyed it and we played well,” said Tamplin. “I didn’t enjoy it much with 10 minutes to go as it was stressful but we got there. We were the better team and I saw some of the old Billericay bite.

“We did the hard work off the ball and I felt it was a big result in our season. They are flying in their league and they did their utmost to retain this cup.

“This is better than last year’s cup win because of the position we are in now with the wheels slightly falling off in the league.

“Last year the season was over, it was a game to nothing but this was the start of a potential treble or the start of the collapse.

"It was very important ahead of the run of games we have coming up in the league and I am so pleased.”
