SOUTH Essex’s non-league sides continued their pre-season preparations in a number of friendlies.

East Thurrock United came from behind to seal a 2-1 triumph over Colchester United.

Ryan Gondoh, who spent time on loan with Isthmian North side Maldon & Tiptree last season, put the League Two side in front on the stroke of half-time.

However, Sam Higgins turned the game on its head after coming off the bench for the second half.

Higgins got Rocks back on level terms just two minutes after the break, before the frontman grabbed the winner 11 minutes from time.

Meanwhile, Bowers & Pitsea claimed a 2-1 win over Sittingbourne.

Rob Small’s charges are looking to go one better in the Isthmian North this term after missing out on promotion in the play-offs three months ago.

Bowers’ record goalscorer Lewis Manor got his name on the scoresheet, while Jordan Wilson was also clinical in front of goal.

Sittingbourne’s goal – which saw them get back on level terms – was scored by Kane Rowland.

Elsewhere, Canvey Island suffered a 2-1 defeat to Herne Bay in their only away friendly of the summer.

Conor Gough saved a Herne Bay penalty inside the opening five minutes, but the hosts took the lead when a Steve Sheehan error allowed Jake Embery to break the deadlock.

Herne Bay doubled their advantage nine minutes after the break, but Martin Tuohy continued his fine goalscoring form during pre-season by latching onto a Mitch Gilbey free-kick and finding the back of the net three minutes later.

However, Danny Heale’s side were unable to get back on level terms.

Basildon United went head-to-head with May & Baker at Woodlands School.

And Marc Harrison’s Bees were 3-0 winners as they continued to prepare for the Isthmian North campaign.

Brian Moses, who has joined from Redbridge during the close season, notched a brace of goals and Joe Skeels also found the back of the net.
