GREAT Wakering Rovers manager Garry Kimble says he got the response he wanted from a weekend defeat despite losing on penalties in the Isthmian League Cup.

Goals from Jake Gordon and Jason Ring took Tuesday’s first round tie against Coggeshall Town to penalties but the hosts emerged 3-2 winners.

And Kimble said he was pleased with what he saw, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup second qualifying round tie against Wealdstone.

“We ran them close,” said Kimble. “I was pleased with the performance and the energy levels were much better than of late.

“We changed to a 4-4-2 system in the second half and it worked for us. I did rest a couple but I was pleased despite the result after Saturday’s defeat (3-2 at Bury Town).

“We need to be harder to beat and our game management needs to be better.”

Kieran Bishop and Darren Mills twice gave Coggeshall the lead on Tuesday before Gordon and Ring levelled, the latter in the 90th minute.

But two misses in the shoot-out proved costly to Wakering.

Basildon United also exited the competition following a 1-0 reverse against AFC Hornchurch.

Former Bowers & Pitsea striker Brad Warner scored the only goal of the contest.

Basildon boss Marc Harrison named a strong team for the League Cup clash.

The Urchins missed a number of chances to extend their lead in the second half although the game would have gone for penalties had it not been for Callum Chafer’s late save from Connor Mead.
