SOUTHEND AC are also experiencing a surge in interest – and it’s not just the youngsters.

Club secretary June Cork said since the Olympics began she has had enquiries from parents of children as young as six and from people wanting to take up the sport at 40.

She said: “We have noticed an increase in enquries and from a whole range of ages.

“We would expect that after an Olympics, there always is, and if we can keep five per cent of those that would be a great result.”

Southend AC are hoping those inspired to take up athletics sign up to compete in an event at their annual club championship and open meeting on Bank Holiday Monday (August 27).

The meeting kicks off with a one-mile walk at 10.30am and runs throughout the day, with all track and field events covered.

It is open to athletes of all age groups from under-13 upwards. There are also events for the “minis” or under-11s. Entry is £3 on the day.
