STRIKER Jay Curran and midfielder Kevin Dobinson face late fitness tests for Canvey ahead of tonight’s home game with Leiston.

Curran pulled up with a suspected hamstring problem in the opening day win at Wingate, and Dobinson had to come off with a foot injury.

Canvey manager Steve Tilson says he will see how they respond to treatment ahead of the tonight’s visit of last year’s Ryman One North champions.

Tilson was happy with his side’s second half-display on a testing afternoon at the Harry Abrahams Stadium on Saturday.

Tonight’s game against league newcomers Leiston – who started their campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Cray – looks an easier prospect on paper.

But Tilson said his Gulls side will approach all of their games in the same way this season – regardless of who they are playing.

“I concentrate on how we play and not anyone else,” he said.

“We don’t have scouting reports on Leiston or any of our opposition, so we don’t know what they are going to do.

“So we just focus on what we need to do, and if we do that we will win more than we lose.

“So that will be our philosophy this year – just making sure we do things right.”

Concord manager Danny Cowley said he’s looking for a positive response from his players following Saturday’s opening day defeat to Bognor Regis.

But it could hardly be more difficult for the Beachboys tonight as they go to fancied Lowestoft Town, who have put 12 past Concord without reply in the last three games between the sides at Crown Meadow.

Cowley said he felt the Bognor defeat was down to “too many individual errors”, and added: “Lowestoft tonight will present different challenges.

“Saturday will have taken a lot out of our players’ energy reserves, so we will look at that and decide on our best team for this game.

“I think Lowestoft have the strongest squad in the league. “But we beat them 3-2 at home towards the end of last season in what was probably our best performance of the year, and I think we are due a change of luck at their place.”

Elsewhere in the Ryman Premier tonight, East Thurrock go to Wealdstone.

Rocks boss John Coventry said his players looked “drained and leggy after half an hour” in their opening day draw with Kingstonian. He said: “Tonight against Weladstone, we start again and put Saturday behind us. “I’m trying to think of someone that had a good performance against Kingstonian, but I’m struggling.”

Billericay will look to build on their gutsy opening day win against Truro in the Conference South when they travel to Hayes & Yeading tonight.

Both teams had a man sent off on the opening day – Town striker Jay May was dismissed, and Hayes’ Manny Williams was given his marching orders in their 1-1 draw at Weston-super-Mare. Billericay midfielder Glenn Poole said: “We have nothing to fear going into this game or any other in this division because nobody expects anything of us, and we need to enjoy that.

“Last year everyone expected us to go and win the league after we won a few games, but now we have no pressure at all.

“We’re are confident about what we’re going to do and we’re confident we can match anyone in the league.

“So what will be will be, and we’re just going to go and enjoy it.”

And there’s a tasty-looking local derby in the Essex Senior League cup tonight, as Great Wakering host in-form Hullbridge Sports.

And also in that competition, Southend Manor welcome Burnham Rabmlers to Southchurch Park.
