ASHLEY Miller’s free-kick three minutes before the end of extra-time saw Canvey progress in the FA Trophy at the expense of a stubborn Wroxham side.

Following their stalemate at the Prospects Stadium on Saturday, it was tense evening in the replay at Trafford Park on Tuesday night.

Steve Tilson had challenged his strikers to start finding the net and Jay Curran obliged to give the Gulls a 35th-minute lead from Danny Heale’s squared ball.

But the hosts levelled 16 minutes from time with a 25-yard free-kick from Remi Gordon, and then almost took the lead when Canvey defender Richard Orlu hit his own post with a header.

But Wroxham were dealt a body blow five minutes before the end of the 90 when they had Gavin Lemmon sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.

Wroxham keeper Michael Hilton was forced into a number of fine saves in the additional period and it looked like the tie would be settled by penalties until Miller scored with a direct free-kick of his own to send the travelling Gulls supporters into raptures.

It was sweet revenge for the full-back, who suffered a crushing FA Cup defeat against Wroxham while playing for Concord last season.
