My latest column once again comes from home on a day off from cricket training ahead of our next game tomorrow.

Firstly I must reflect on what was our most comprehensive County Championship win so far this season, against Hampshire last weekend.

The game was set up nicely by (Alastair) Cook and (Tom) Westley who batted extremely well, both making centuries.

There weren’t any other big contributions but Ravi (Bopara) and Tendo (Ryan ten Doeschate) added some more runs to get us up to 360 in our first innings.

What followed in our bowling innings soon after was bizarre as Jamie Porter and I had Hampshire at 18-5!

The stand out performer was Jamie Porter, with 5-24 in the innings.

It is one of the best bowling spells I have ever seen and he blew Hampshire away. It felt like he was going to take a wicket with every ball he bowled.

After we induced the follow-on, it was Porter who was again the stand-out player for us, making batsmen play and miss.

Simon Harmer led the way with three key, quick wickets. But all-in-all the game was wrapped up by tea on the third day.

It as a clinical team performance with three outstanding performances from different individuals.

As well as momentarily occupying top of Division One for a time, we qualified top in the Royal London One-Day Cup southern group for a home semi-final.

With so much momentum and a habit of winning we will be very hopeful to get through to a Lord’s final.

We know the semi (against either Notts or Somerset) will be very tough but we will continue to follow the same plan we have had throughout the campaign.

It has obviously worked so far.
