The number and range of job opportunities in south Essex is rising fast, led by the property market sector.

The Reed Job Index indicates vacancy numbers have risen 17 per cent across the area in the past 12 months.

In Basildon, a record number of new businesses set up in the town in the first half of 2013. Many of them are actively recruiting staff.

DC Law, the property law firm, reflects the trend. The firm is holding a number of open evenings this month, aimed at people looking for new career opportunities.

Sarah Cowley, director of D C Law’s Basildon branch, said: “Due to growth in the business and property market, we are expanding fast. We are looking for new staff across the board, including administrators, and negotiators and legally qualified personnel.

We will also consider taking on recent school leavers if they show the right level of enthusiasm and intelligence.”

In Rochford, a wide range of employers will be attending a special jobs fair at Rochford library, on the look-out for new talent.

Andy Marriott, of employment specialist 11Ten, which is organising the fair, said: “We are definitely seeing an upsurge in job opportunities in this area, although a bit more commitment is required from would-be employees these days. They need to show a readiness to up-skill – for instance, by doing a short course in the new Windows 13 system.

“The old days of wandering up and down the high street knocking on doors are over. Employers want definite evidence either of existing skills and qualifications, or at least of the readiness to acquire them.

“But for those with the right approach, the job openings are now out there in a way that they weren’t a year ago.”
