AS it celebrated 60 years on our screens memories of Blue Peter have been flooding back.

And Colchester couple Jean and Ken Knight are amongst those who were swept up in the popularity of the show.

The anniversary of the show, which started out life in 1968, sparked a rifle through their wardrobes and back to the days when Jean created a set of jumpers with the distinctive logo on for Ken and their three children, Martin, Patrick and Catherine.

Now in the forties and fifties, the children were big fans of the show and so mum Jean set about creating the sweaters - and they are now looking for a good home for them.

Jean explains : “You could buy the patterns in the early 70s.

“The show appealed to people to make them and then send in pictures of them wearing them and so I started making them for Ken and the children.

“I think it took about a year, I wasn’t the best knitter but you could tell what it was meant to be.”

The patterns were actually created in the 1960s and were a fisherman’s style with a roll neck.

The couple originally lived in Lincoln but moved to Colchester 35 years ago.

Jean remembers she made the jumpers in around 1973, when its regular presenter was Lesley Judd.

Now the couple are hoping someone collecting memorabilia may take the jumpers in to a collection.

“We have been watching all the programmes about the 60th anniversary and we remembered the jumpers and just thought someone might like them.

“They are just sitting there at home.

“Perhaps we should have sent in a picture of them all being worn but we didn’t think of it at the time although the kids loved watching it.”

Blue Peter first aired in 1958 October 1958 and is the longest-running children’s television programme in the world.

There have been thirty-seven official presenters of Blue Peter during that time and a host of campaigns and competitions for which the prestigious Blue Peter badges are handed out.

The original Paton knitting patterns are still available from some online shops for anyone who fancies making their own.
