Do you remember the shops in these vintage images from our archives ?
They might be long gone but live on in people’s memories, from hardware store Luckin-Smith on Head Street to the nearby Sacks & Brendlor, which sold leather and fur items.
Family run Luckin-Smith had enjoyed a long life, as these images show, having previously had a grocers aspect which was sold off before the shop itself closed for good in 1981 having traded for 50 years.
Also pictured is Jacklins, on the High Street, which would later become part of what is now Fenwick’s.
Built in 1927 for Mr F Jacklin, it was a tobacconist and sweet shop, with tea rooms above.
