THIS weekend we will fall silent to honour those who died for their country.

And in this, the 100th year since the end of the First World War, acts of Remembrance will be particularly poignant and thoughtful.

At 6am on Sunday in Southend, pipers will play the Scottish Lament “Battle’s O’er” at Southend Cenotaph, Clifftown Parade, Shoebury War Memorial and Eastwood Memorial Hall, Rayleigh Road.

Between 10.30am and noon, hundreds will turn out as usual for the annual Remembrance service and parade.

The parade will start at Prittlewell Square and proceed to Southend Cenotaph for a Service of Remembrance at 11am.

At the same time, the Shoebury Remembrance Service and Parade will be held, starting from Hinguar School to the Shoebury Cenotaph, in Campfield Road, for a Service of Remembrance at 11am led by Reverend Frank Smith.

Following the service there, will be a gun salute with hymns and laying of wreaths.

People are also invited to the Eastwood Remembrance Service at 2pm at Eastwood Memorial Hall, including a service and parade from 3pm at St Clements Church.

From 4pm, a concert of remembrance will be held at the Cliffs Pavilion, featuring Southend Choral Society, Eastwood Chorale, Southend Bach Choir and Southend Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are £16 with proceeds going to Help for Heroes.

A beacon will be lit at the Southend Cenotaph symbolising an end to the darkness of war and a return to the light of peace at 7pm.

Tomorrow the Southend Boys and Girls’ Choirs will be heard performing some traditional First World War songs at Liverpool Street Station, as commuters start their journeys home.

A special toast event for fallen soldiers will be held a Southend hotel. It will be held at the Palace Theatre, Westcliff, on Sunday, November 11, from 10.30am until 12.30pm.

There will be free entertainment, including a pianist, singers and performances from our Palace Youth Company and external performers.

On Saturday, November 10, the Forget Never Sacrifice and Legacy Project will perform the last play in the series commemorating the end of the First World War.

The play is at Woodlands School, Basildon at 7pm.

On Sunday, November 11, at 6.30pm there will be a beacon lighting at Wat Tyler Park to mark the end of the First World War, followed by a barbecue.

A Remembrance Day Service will also take place at 3pm at the Laindon War Memorial.

In Basildon, the parade will start at 10.30am from East Walk and will arrive at St Martin’s Square at 10.40am where there will be a service, bell ringing and wreath laying.

St Mary’s and All Saints Church will hold Remembrance events from 2.45pm on Sunday, including war songs by the Laindon Community Choir, a presentation of colours by uniformed organisations, a service of remembrance and music and displays.

In Billericay, there will be concert at Emmanuel Church on Saturday from 7.30pm.

The beacon at Sun Corner, Billericay, will be lit at 6.15pm on Sunday.

In Wickford, the parade will meet from 9.45am at the council car park at the Co-op supermarket and will move on from 10.20am to be at the memorial at 11am.

In Hockley, a service will take place at 2pm on Sunday in November 11 at the War Memorial, in Southend Road, Hockley, followed by a parade along Southend Road to Hockley Royal British Legion.

In Thundersley, Thundersley Congregational Church will hold a music event at King John School, Shipwrights Drive on Saturday from 6.45pm with music from the D-Day Darlings and The Essex Police Band.

On Sunday, there will then by a service of remembrance at Thundersley Memorial, Hart Road, starting at 10.45am.

A parade will take place from the air cadet centre, in Clifton Road, Canvey. People will gather at 10am and the parade will leave at 10.15am. The parade will march to The Paddocks, where a service will be held at 10.40am.

Canvey Town Council has planted 47 trees to remember the 47 people from Canvey who died during the First World War.

The trees will be planted bordering the wildflower meadow at Tewkes Creek, off Kellington Road, with an obelisk and commemorative plaque in the centre.

A dedication service is being held at 4pm at the wildflower meadow and everyone is welcome to attend.

In Rayleigh, join the chairman of Rochford Council, councillor David Merrick, for a civic service and beacon lighting ceremony on Sunday from 6.30pm at Bellingham Lane, Rayleigh.

There will also be services at St. Mary’s Parish Church, Benfleet, starting at 9.45 am before moving to the town’s war memorial.
