PARKING restrictions may be put in place to stop airport passengers parking in residential roads while on holiday despite no residents supporting the move.

Despite concerns from residents and churchgoers Southend Council will consider a two hour parking restriction between midday and 2pm.

The roads would include Eastwoodbury Lane, Eastwoodbury Crescent and Alton Gardens.

A report has been prepared for the traffic regulations committee on Monday but some residents fear they are the ones who will suffer.

From Eastbury Lane the council received several objections including the impact on visitors and concerns it will simply shift the problem to other lanes.

Similar objections were made on Eastwoodbury Crescent and Alton Gardens where residents complained they would not be able to leave their cars at home when they went to work.

One resident described it as a “gross infringement of the residents’ rights” while churchgoers also worry they could suffer.

A representative of St Stephen’s Church, Alton Gardens, objected stating the restrictions would be inconvenient during Sunday services and could restrict use of the church.

The spokesman added the church is set to be developed into a widely used community facility this year and parking was an important part of this.

In a report council officers acknowledged there were “no comments supporting the introduction of the restriction” and councillors should not approve the scheme.

Another set of changes are proposed for Palmeria Avenue, Station Road and Holland Road.

These will see the introduction of permit parking places and shared use parking.

The permit parking is expected to reduce the number of non-residents parking outside homes which can occur all day due to the proximity to the station and Cliffs Pavilion.

An informal consultation revealed this has support among residents.

Both proposals will be discussed at the meeting on Monday when councillors will decide.
