A FRENZIED driver was seen trying to deliberately run a man over after allegedly robbing him.

An eyewitness to the incident, which happened near the Chalvedon Hall pub, in Basildon, called an ambulance for the injured man after two cars collided and one hit the pedestrian, who also fled holding his head.

A spokesman for Essex Police, said: “We were called to reports of a collision in Basildon.

“Two vehicles were in collision just off Rectory Road at around 8.20 pm on Tuesday.

“One of the vehicles was also in collision with a pedestrian.

“It was reported both vehicles left the scene.”

Eyewitnesses claimed a row took place before the crashes.

Detectives are investigating the hit-and-run crashes.

One witness, posting on social media, said: “Two drivers nicked something off of a guy but then knocked him over.

“One BMW and a Golf. The guy flew across the road outside the pub, I saw it all happen.

“He then started to run holding his head and told me they had robbed him and hit him and sped off.

“Neither cars had their lights on either and headed towards Rectory Road.”

Councillor Craig Rimmer added: “This is a worrying incident and I’d encourage any resident who knows or saw anything to come forward to the police because we all have to come together as a community to stop violent crime where we see it.

“We know we are going to get 365 more police officers across the county and we are arguing strongly to have more in Basildon so we can have that deterrent that extra officers bring.

“We are also going to be working on other anti-crime initiatives to be brought to council this month.

“I would urge the victim to come forward to stop this sort of incident happening to anybody else. “It’s important the person who has committed this crime is apprehended and hopefully locked up.

“The good part of preventing crime is also making sure these people receive a good sentence.

“I don’t want to jump to too many conclusions without all the facts.

“But the victim is a key part in this and we do not know what has happened to him - this could potentially turn into an attempted murder case.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “If you saw or heard anything, have CCTV or dashcam footage, or have any other information, please call us on 101 quoting incident 1158 of February or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
